Alberta School Anaphylaxis "Policy Advisory”
In the fall of 2006, a committee was formed by the Alberta School Board Association (ASBA). This committee’s mandate was to create a provincial anaphylaxis policy advisory. Existing provincial policies were reviewed, and experts were consulted regarding medical and legal implications of the policy advisory. The common goal was to provide consistency in anaphylaxis education, including awareness of allergies, regular training of school staff, and to have emergency protocols in place, throughout Alberta’s schools.
Currently available resources were used in the writing process. These included:
- Anaphylaxis in Schools and Other Settings published by the Canadian Society of Allergy and Clinical Immunology
- Anaphylaxis Reference Kit and Asthma Reference Kit published by the Allergy/Asthma Information Association (Note: these kits can be purchased from AAIA)
- Anaphylaxis: A Handbook for School Boards published by the Canadian School Boards Association
“Allergy and Anaphylaxis Informational Response (AAIR) resources were distributed to all Alberta schools to increase awareness about allergy causes, effects, and treatments among educators, parents and other care providers.

The AAIR resource is part of the Alberta School Boards Association’s policy advisory that was developed by the Anaphylaxis Committee in fall 2007. Alberta Education provided a grant for the initiative to assist school boards in providing secure and caring places for children to learn.” From Alberta Education web page at http://www.education.alberta.ca/admin/studenthealth/aair.aspx.
What’s a POLICY ADVISORY?
“The ASBA prepares policy advisories on issues for members to use as guidelines as they develop or revise existing policies. These advisories are not policies in themselves, but rather include points that boards may wish to consider in drafting policies to fit their own particular circumstances. “
NOTE: These documents give recommended content for school policies, not a legislated solution for all Alberta School Boards.
The Anaphylaxis Policy Advisory and the companion Background report have recently been approved by the Alberta School board Association’s Board of directors, and Alberta Education. These documents are now available on ABSA’s web site.
